Robert Nagel, an important American trumpet player, teacher and one of the most important musicians in the development of the brass quintet celebrates a birthday this week. Born in 1924 in the city of Freeland, Pennsylvania, Nagel went on to become a major influence in the world of trumpet performance and brass chamber music. Nagel, a founder of the legendary New York Brass Quintet, became a leading person in the development of the literature for brass. His integrity and musical efforts paved the way for the brass quintet to become acknowledged as a serious chamber ensemble facilitating its acceptance into the most important concert venues. Nagel’s trumpet performance was of the highest artistic order; he often appeared as a soloist with orchestras and chamber groups.  He has a long list of recordings. Nagel performed with numerous illuminati of the music world including Igor Stravinsky.
Robert Nagel was a highly respected teacher and pedagogue who contributed many important works to the chamber brass library as well as an important collection of trumpet etude books. Nagel was associated with some of the leading schools of music and served on the music faculty of Yale University from 1957 to 1988.
